Some related terms and explanations of induction heating

Apr. 16, 2026

For those who have no concept or experience in induction heating, you can take a look at the following data. It is beneficial for a clearer understanding of intermediate frequency induction heating equipment in practical applications of induction heating, rather than providing a scientifically accurate definition. In addition, it ignores the electromagnetic energy radiation of power supply devices and adopts the International System of Units (SI)

Some related terms and explanations of induction heating

1、 Induction heating generates an alternating magnetic field around the inductor coil when an alternating current flows through it. A metal conductor in an alternating magnetic field will absorb electromagnetic energy from the magnetic field and generate heat, so induction heating is also electromagnetic heating.

2、 Current

Current is the abbreviation for current intensity. It is a measure of the amount of charge passing through a conductor's cross-section in a unit of time. In the application of induction heating, the current range inside the inductor coil is between tens of amperes and tens of thousands of amperes.

3、 Voltage

Voltage is the driving force of current, generated by batteries, AC power sources, and high-frequency generators. Voltage is always applied at both ends of circuit components, measured in volts (V). The voltage at both ends of a single turn sensor is several volts, and for multi turn coils in a melting furnace, it can reach several thousand volts.

4、 Resistance

Resistance is the ratio of voltage to current, and is one of the basic parameters of a circuit. Its unit is ohms (Q), with 1. Q.=1V/A.

5、 Magnetic field

The magnetic field is distributed in the surrounding space and changes in a timely manner with the variation of the field source. Current and long-term magnets are both magnetic field sources.

6、 Magnetic field lines

Magnetic field lines help observe the distribution of magnetic fields, and areas with high magnetic field line density indicate strong magnetic fields. Magnetic force always closes around the field source.

7、 Magnetic flux is a measure of magnetic field, and like electric potential generating current, magnetic potential generates magnetic flux. The current in a coil, specifically the number of ampere turns of the coil, is the magnetic potential. The path of magnetic flux must be closed, measured in Weber (Wb).

8、 Magnetic induction intensity

It is a measure of magnetic flux density and is a vector unit. The unit is Tesla (T).

9、 Magnetic field strength

It is a measure of magnetic potential strength, similar to the pressure gradient in a certain area of water flow. The unit is the ampere per unit length (A/m).

10、 Magnetic permeability

The dominant magnetic permeability of a substance is determined by its ratio B/H. We can define the relative magnetic permeability of a substance by calibrating the "magnetic permeability" of air to 1. For all non-magnetic substances, the relative magnetic permeability is 1. The relative magnetic permeability of ferromagnetic materials can reach tens of thousands, and its value is also affected by the magnetic field strength, indicating a decrease in the required magnetic potential under the same magnetic flux conditions.
